What were the most valuable lessons or experiences you gained from GMBA?
NTU GMBA helped me a lot. At first, when I joined the program, it was only so I could leave my old job. I really wanted to quit, but my parents wouldn't allow me to until I found a new one. I then told them that if I applied for the NTU GMBA program and got in, I would become a full-time student. They agreed. I got accepted and was able to be a full-time student for two years. While studying there, I learned everything about running an actual company. I didn’t think I’d ever have to go through that, but look at me now — nine years later, I'm slowly running a business that my parents want me to eventually take over. I cannot thank NTU GMBA enough for everything I’ve learned. I’ve been able to apply all the knowledge I gained back then to running an actual business now.
What is your current role and how did your GMBA experience contribute to your career?
I am currently running my dad's business, which he invested in a few years ago. We run a clinic that helps people regrow their hair or offers hair transplants. My role is the Director of VIP Services, where I use my strengths as a 'people person' while also applying my professional skills. One of the core classes I had to take was Operations Management, and I think this was the class I learned the most from, especially after running an actual business. With the old business model, I knew it wasn't going anywhere and needed improvement. I remembered learning about enhancing efficiency and maximizing profit, while still making some subtle changes within the business. It was difficult at first because things seemed slow, and the results didn’t show until almost a year later. But as things fell into place and the staff listened, we were able to see growth within the company. That was when I finally saw smiles on my parents' faces and knew what I had done was the right choice.
What advice would you give to current GMBA students or recent graduates?
There are days when you feel like these classes are boring, but trust me, one day you'll be grateful for them because they'll teach you exactly what you need in the years to come.
My GMBA experience was wonderful, and I will always be grateful for the two years I spent there and the lifelong friends I made along the way.
